Passion and purpose drive us in life. It’s what gets you out of bed in the morning, what makes you push yourself, what sparks your curiosity and motivates you to continually grow and improve.
When we have passion and purpose, the hard things seem easier. It’s what gets you through a tough day, what motivates you to become the best version of yourself.
It’s no secret that this is the fuel of the successful. Despite setbacks and failures – passion allows them to persevere and push past all obstacles. We see this in stoic philosophy, where every challenge is met with courage and a graceful pursuit of excellence.
So how do you find it? What if you just don’t care a whole lot about goals and can’t get motivated? Let me tell you that if you do not cultivate passion and purpose in your life you will have a very difficult time reaching your goal. The inspiration that comes from within is stronger than any shitty vision board.
Why are you reading this? What brought you here? Do you have a goal to transform your body and life? Ask yourself why you want to achieve this goal. Once you have an answer. Ask yourself again. Continue this process until you have your root answer. What is REALLY driving you? Why is this so important to you and what will happen if you never achieve this? What are you willing to do to ensure you keep moving in the right direction?
Your first job is to make sure you align your values. Your values drive your actions and make you who your are. What is your mission and what values do you need to embody to become the person who will achieve this mission? Choose and write down 3 values that are core to you:
The list below contains common core values:
- Inner Harmony
- Meaningful Work
Choosing just 3 core values will help you decide what becomes a priority and what to avoid. Not every opportunity is for you. You cannot pursue every path or every goal. Being able to decipher what goals align with your core values will help you live a more meaningful life.
Make a list of people you admire. What values and traits make them inspirational? What have they achieved that matters? Find 3-5 people who motivate you to achieve and grow.
Live in the moment
Don’t delay fun or happiness by tying it to an end goal. I’ll be happy when I achieve “x” is a terrible mindset and way to live. As cliche as it sounds, you must learn to love the journey. You must get up each day knowing you can make a difference in your own life and to those around you. Create a life that you love instead of always fixating on an end goal. Commit to loving every day instead of complaining about not being where you want to be or not having what you want.
Action often precedes motivation. The more real action you take, the more motivated you will become. This is most important to remember when you feel like you have no motivation or feel like giving up. Action is not planning, it is not talking about what you will do or declaring it on social media. It is doing the hard things that need to get done. It is doing the things you tend to avoid or procrastinate on. Need motivation? Start by taking action.
What are you grateful for? Take time each day to think about what you appreciate in your life. Remember to be thankful for the fact that you have the ability to change and make your life better, as well as the lives of those around you. You have an incredible opportunity, if you will just reach out and take it.
We know that those who succeed have a high degree of grit. This is something you can develop. It is a growth mindset. Nothing is permanent, especially failure. Continue to try, try, try again.
Nothing is Permanent
Knowing that not even failure is permanent is freeing. Even if you go in the wrong direction, it is better than no direction at all. Combat your fear of failure by realising that there is always another chance to start over.
What do you have to lose?
We don’t know how long we will live. What will you achieve in your time here? Do you really have time to delay your dreams and goals? Live everyday as if you may not see the next. This comes back to appreciating what you have now and not wasting time dwelling on the negatives. No more excuses, no more procrastination, no more wasted days.
